Application of the Convention on Ballast Water Management

Ballast Water Management Convention was ratified in February 2004 and will enter into force on the 8th of September 2017. This Convention contains regulations for the control and management of ships ballast water and sediments with aimed to the prevention of transportation of undesirable microorganisms and pathogens through the ballast water. This Convention applies to all ships in international trade including submersibles, floating craft, floating platforms, FSUs and FPSOs.

The Marine Environmental Protection Committee, at its 71st session (MEPC71), approved draft amendments to the International Water Management Convention (BWMC) where the Regulation B-3 was revised.

Approved modifications will be adopted at the next session which is to be held from 9 to 13 April 2018. Therefore, in order to avoid a dual treaty regime until the effective entry into force date of the amendments and provide certainty in the application of the Convention, MEPC 71 recommended that Maritime Administrations undertake an immediate application of the revised implementation scheme in lieu of the previous one, adopted by Resolution A.1088(28).

The International Merchant Marine Registry of Belize with the aim of providing Ship Owners and ISM Operator detailed information regarding compliance with the Convention issued Merchant Marine Notice text of which you may read following the link.
